Drivers were urged to use caution as light rain and freezing rain created "hazardous driving conditions" around the Anchorage Bowl on Saturday.
The conditions compelled the National Weather Service in Anchorage to issue a winter weather advisory, which was in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday.
"Ice accumulations of one tenth of an inch is expected on road surfaces," the weather service said in an alert.
As of 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Anchorage police had responded to 28 crashes, including five with injuries, a police dispatch supervisor said. Another 22 vehicles in distress were reported — often a car stuck in a ditch or otherwise in need of assistance.
Police warned of worsening road conditions Saturday evening, and asked people to use care and drive at slower speeds.
