Anchorage teenager Grayson Davey teamed up with a California trapshooter to win a gold medal and set an American record the trap mixed event at the Championship of the Americas on Tuesday in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Davey, 17, only missed one target in qualification, hitting 74 of 75. That put him and partner Ashley Carroll of Solvang, California, in second place heading into the finals.
The pair combined for a score of 46 out of 50 in the finals, setting an American record en route to winning the gold medal. Davey and Carroll finished four points ahead of the silver-medal team from Mexico. The other U.S. team, which included Olympic gold medalist Glenn Eller, finished fourth.
"I was feeling a little cocky today and sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't — today it just happened to be one of those times it worked," Davey said in a press release from USA Shooting.
Mixed trapshooting will be an event at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
