Four-year-old Olin “Turbo” Ahonen, sprinted out of the starting line of the inaugural Olin Turbo and Mom Family Fun Run on Sunday, Mother’s Day, at Service High. He is followed closely by his mother, Mary Ahonen, and father, Adam Ahonen, also wearing red.
The race was a Christmas present to his mother. When Adam asked Olin what he wanted to give his mom for Christmas, Olin responded, “I’m not sure. I like doing races with mom; I want to get her a race for Christmas.” Said Adam: “So we got her a race and put together a little community event to support the idea he had.”
An announced field of 220 people signed up for the 2K run on the Service High ski trails. All of the proceeds went to the Abused Women’s Aid In Crisis (AWAIC) shelter. Mary (Pearce) Ahonen ran track in high school at Dimond and at UAA. She was inducted into the Seawolf Hall of Fame in 2017. When asked how she liked her Christmas gift, she said, “Oh, my gosh. Amazing. Way beyond my expectations. I’m shocked. I’m really happy.”
